Spanish-language music videos are becoming increasingly popular and are taking over YouTube charts.

As we know, when a video hits 1 billion views, it joins an elite club. Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor,” Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailando” and “La Bicicleta” by Carlos Vives and Shakira are some of the Latin artists who have reached the milestone.

The list, of course, is led by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” — not only among Latino videos but globally. From Becky G and Bad Bunny’s “Mayores” to “Despacito,”

“Despacito” has reached 5 billion plays on the world’s most popular streaming site isn’t actually that surprising given how popular it was throughout 2017. In fact, it’s only surprising that it took this long for the tune to hit this benchmark.

The Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee-fronted track is the first Latin song, and the first primarily sung in a language other than English, to be streamed 1 billion times on Spotify alone, though when all streams are taken into account across several major platforms, the number of times that track has been played skyrockets. It’s amassed 4.77 billion views on YouTube (where it remains the biggest that’s ever been posted to the video hosting site), so it’s not impossible to believe that “Despacito” could easily have billions more streams when factoring in plays on Apple Music, Tidal and other platforms.

When “Despacito” was first released back in January 2017, it was immediately greeted warmly by Spanish-speakers and those who love Latin music the world over. It requires almost no time to rise on charts in dozens of countries, and while it was performing well in America, it needed a little something extra to push it onto the masses and to help them realize what a great piece of music it is.

International pop superstar Justin Bieber heard the song in a club and decided he wanted to be a part of the phenomenon, so he wrote new lyrics and practiced (or more likely, learned) Spanish before releasing a remixed version of the track. That new bilingual cut bolted up the charts, and it went on to rule the Hot 100 for a record-tying 16 consecutive weeks. It recently earned a nomination for Record of the Year at the Grammys, though it lost (somehow) to Bruno Mars’ “24k Magic.”

The version of “Despacito” that is now in the billion-plus club on Spotify is the one which features Bieber, but the original, which only features Fonsi and Yankee, is also doing extremely well. That original take has racked up almost 780 million plays, so while it won’t hit 1 billion for some time, it is well on its way.
